The mission of Mind on Diabetes by Sonja Cunningham is to create an online space where people with diabetes can learn and acquire fellowship, without judgment, in order to appreciate the silver linings of living with diabetes.
Whether you have Type 1 or Type 2, people with diabetes often feel judged by their peers, nagged by their family, and faulted by their medical team. There is currently a gap in medical care when it comes to addressing the mental health aspects of diabetes. This gap is worsened by the lack of education provided to patients, caregivers, and medical teams regarding the role of mental health in continuous diabetes care.
I have been living with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus since 2001. At the age of 12, I was wheeled out of the Oakland Coliseum on a stretcher, in the middle of an Oakland A’s game, on my parent’s wedding anniversary, with a blood glucose of 845.
Following the transition from pediatric to adult endocrine care I realized the support system for adults with diabetes is non-existent in the clinical setting. I want to provide a resource for people to understand the connection between sound mental health and continuous diabetes care.
